Fashion: Creative Director & Founder – Emily

Describe your job in couple of sentences:

I design children’s swimwear and beachwear for stylish kids. We create prints as well as shapes and designs and sell them to high end stores and resorts.

When did you know what you wanted to do?

When I realised that there was a very limited choice for mother’s who wanted to dress their kids stylishly on the beach.

Did you go to university, go straight into the workforce or do an apprenticeship?

I started working when I was 18 having done a 1 year HND course at Fashion College

What was your first job:
 Does it relate to what you do now?

My first job was in a women’s evening fashion label. It doesn’t really relate to
what I do now except it was in the fashion business.

Have you done other jobs in your life – if so what were they:
 Did they have any influence on what you do now?

Yes! I think the job that gave me the best training and experience of my life
was PR. I did PR for about 10 years across different areas including celebrity
PR, Hotels and restaurants and fast moving consumer goods.

How did you find out about your job (how it existed)?

I think I was always interested in PR and the media and how they worked together. I loved the idea of creating an idea or story for a brand and seeing it in print the next day. I had spoken to a journalist who had explained how PR worked.

How did you get the job you wanted- steps and process?

I applied for what was back then the best PR agency in town. I literally drove the Director mad and in the end sat in their reception one day until she would give me 10 minutes of her day. I got offered a job on the spot.

What qualities do you need to have to be successful in your field?

2. Perseverance (if you don’t ask you don’t get!)
3. Balls of steel
4. A Clear vision of what you want and where you are going
5. Creativity and not afraid to use it and be free with it
